  1. P1

A same-sized whole is split into 6 equal parts and 4 parts are shaded. What fraction is shaded?

    Reveal explanation

    Answer: 2/3

The denominator counts all 6 equal parts; the numerator counts the 4 shaded parts. In simplest form this is 2/3.

    4/6
Each full bar represents the same-sized whole; shaded parts show the fraction.
  2. P2

    Reveal explanation

    Answer: 5/6

The denominator counts all 12 equal parts; the numerator counts the 10 shaded parts. In simplest form this is 5/6.

    10/12

    Reveal explanation

    Answer: 2/3

The denominator counts all 3 equal parts; the numerator counts the 2 shaded parts. In simplest form this is 2/3.

    2/3
Each full bar represents the same-sized whole; shaded parts show the fraction.

Learn and understand

Fractions are numbers, so they have places on a number line. First identify the length of one whole from 0 to 1. If the whole interval is divided into eight equal lengths, each step equals one eighth. Three steps from zero reaches three eighths, even if the printed line has been stretched. Draw a line from 0 to 1 and split it into four equal intervals. The third step is 3/4. Count spaces between ticks, not the tick marks themselves.

Represent it three ways

  1. Concrete: Build equal pieces, measures, counters or shapes with real objects when useful.
  2. Pictorial: Mark 0 and 1 before drawing any subdivision. Divide the interval evenly and count intervals, not just interior marks.
  3. Abstract: Write the matching number sentence, calculation, comparison or mathematical description. Explain each number's unit.
