  1. P1

    Complete the equivalent fraction: 3/8 = ?/24.

    Reveal explanation

    Answer: 9

Subdivide each of the 8 equal parts into 3 pieces. That multiplies shaded parts and total parts by 3, so 3/8 = 9/24.

  2. P2

    Complete the equivalent fraction: 1/5 = ?/15.

    Reveal explanation

    Answer: 3

Subdivide each of the 5 equal parts into 3 pieces. That multiplies shaded parts and total parts by 3, so 1/5 = 3/15.

  3. P3

    Complete the equivalent fraction: 4/10 = ?/40.

    Reveal explanation

    Answer: 16

Subdivide each of the 10 equal parts into 4 pieces. That multiplies shaded parts and total parts by 4, so 4/10 = 16/40.

Learn and understand

Simplifying a fraction means naming the same quantity with larger equal-size parts and smaller numbers. If 6 of 8 small cells are shaded, grouping cells into pairs produces 3 of 4 larger cells. No shaded area disappears. The numerator and denominator must share a common factor to reduce. For 6/8, pair the eight equal pieces into four equal groups of two. Six pieces become three such groups, showing 6/8 = 3/4. The shaded length stays unchanged.

Represent it three ways

  1. Concrete: Build equal pieces, measures, counters or shapes with real objects when useful.
  2. Pictorial: Draw the original equal partitions; regroup equal adjacent cells, then write the new numerator and denominator.
  3. Abstract: Write the matching number sentence, calculation, comparison or mathematical description. Explain each number's unit.
