Key vocabulary

partial product
product of one part of each decomposed factor
distributive property
multiplication distributed across a sum
area model
rectangular representation of a product
regroup
exchange ten small units for one larger unit

Understand the concept

Two-digit multiplication combines four partial products. For 24 × 13, split 24 into 20+4 and 13 into 10+3. The four rectangle areas are 200, 60, 40, and 12; together they make 312. This diagram also explains the two shifted rows in column multiplication.
