Multiplying a Unit Fraction by a Whole Number

4A · Chapter 8 · Lesson 1 · MATH-4A-C08-L01

Learning goal. Find one of b equal shares of a whole-number quantity and describe divisibility.

Before you begin

Recall: 4A Ch6/7: equal partitions, mixed numbers and fraction operations. Try these three warm-up problems. If they are difficult, revisit the prerequisite lesson before advancing.

Question 1 · calculation

Calculate 1 5/6 − 1 2/3.

Show answer & reasoning
1/6

Subtract whole quantities and equivalent fractional parts, borrowing one whole if the first fractional part is smaller.

Question 2 · calculation

Calculate 5 1/2 − 1 1/2.

Show answer & reasoning
4

Subtract whole quantities and equivalent fractional parts, borrowing one whole if the first fractional part is smaller.

Question 3 · calculation

Calculate 2 3/4 − 1 1/2.

Show answer & reasoning
1 1/4

Subtract whole quantities and equivalent fractional parts, borrowing one whole if the first fractional part is smaller.

Key vocabulary

unit fraction
fraction with numerator one
fraction of a set
part of a discrete collection
reference whole
quantity to which a fraction applies
remaining amount
quantity after some part is removed

Understand the concept

Finding one unit fraction of a whole-number set means splitting the set into the denominator's equal groups. One fourth of 28 is one of four groups of seven objects, so it is seven. A diagram of equal groups makes the division step visible; an uneven grouping would not represent fourths of the whole.

One of four equal groups

Model it: equal-group counter array. Explain what every part of the model represents, then write a matching equation.

Fully worked examples

Read the problem first and predict the answer. Then study how each quantity is represented and calculated.
