Multiplying a Fraction by a Whole Number — Part 2

4A · Chapter 8 · Lesson 3 · MATH-4A-C08-L03

Learning goal. Simplify products and use partition first, then scale, when efficient.

Before you begin

Recall: 4A Ch6/7: equal partitions, mixed numbers and fraction operations; Multiplying a Fraction by a Whole Number — Part 1. Try these three warm-up problems. If they are difficult, revisit the prerequisite lesson before advancing.

Key vocabulary

unit fraction
fraction with numerator one
fraction of a set
part of a discrete collection
reference whole
quantity to which a fraction applies
remaining amount
quantity after some part is removed

Understand the concept

A fraction times a whole number can often be simplified efficiently by dividing before multiplying. For (3/4)×20, split 20 into four groups of five, then take three groups to get 15. This is the same result as (3×20)/4. Explain why changing calculation order preserves the value.

3 × 2/5 = 6/5

Model it: whole bar divided into four shares. Explain what every part of the model represents, then write a matching equation.
