Learning goal: Split and rearrange nonoverlapping rectangles to determine composite areas.

Before you begin: prerequisite check

Recall: 11.01 and 11.02. Attempt these questions independently first.

Question 1 · inverse area

A rectangular garden has area 18 m² and width 3 m. Find its length.

Show answer and reasoning
6 m

Area = length×width. 18÷3=6 m.

Question 2 · inverse area

A rectangular garden has area 132 m² and width 11 m. Find its length.

Show answer and reasoning
12 m

Area = length×width. 132÷11=12 m.

Question 3 · inverse area

A rectangular garden has area 80 m² and width 8 m. Find its length.

Show answer and reasoning
10 m

Area = length×width. 80÷8=10 m.

Key vocabulary

area
region measured in square units
perimeter
distance around the outer boundary in linear units
composite figure
a shape assembled from simpler nonoverlapping regions
dimension
specified side length

Understand the concept

A composite rectilinear figure can be divided into rectangles that do not overlap. Its total area is the sum of those simpler areas. Another method surrounds it with one large rectangle and subtracts the missing portion. Suppose a 7-by-5 rectangle has a 2-by-3 corner removed: the area is 35−6=29 square units. Label each side and be certain that every interior square is counted once. Two different decompositions should agree; checking both is good mathematical reasoning.

Common misunderstanding to avoid: Double-counting overlaps or omitting cutouts
