Expressing Fractions as Decimals

Semester 4B · Chapter 12 · Lesson 6 · MATH-4B-C12-L06

Learning goal: Convert fractions with compatible denominators to tenths/hundredths decimals.

Before you begin: prerequisite check

Recall: 4A fraction equivalence. Attempt these questions independently first.

Question 1 · fraction

Write 0.97 as a fraction in simplest form.

Show answer and reasoning
97/100

0.97 = 97/100. Reduce by the common factor 1 to 97/100.

Question 2 · fraction

Write 0.53 as a fraction in simplest form.

Show answer and reasoning
53/100

0.53 = 53/100. Reduce by the common factor 1 to 53/100.

Question 3 · fraction

Write 0.04 as a fraction in simplest form.

Show answer and reasoning
1/25

0.04 = 4/100. Reduce by the common factor 4 to 1/25.

Key vocabulary

tenth
one of ten equal parts of a whole
hundredth
one of one hundred equal parts
equivalent decimals
two notations for the same amount
midpoint
exact halfway point between rounding benchmarks

Understand the concept

A fraction whose denominator can be converted to ten or one hundred can be written as a decimal. For example, 3/5 = 6/10 = 0.6, while 7/20 = 35/100 = 0.35. Multiply the numerator and denominator by the same whole number so the fraction stays equivalent. Some denominators cannot produce an exact finite tenths/hundredths representation. Do not force a simple terminating decimal where the fraction needs more precision.

Common misunderstanding to avoid: Using arbitrary denominator as decimal digits
