Subtracting Tenths with Regrouping

Semester 4B · Chapter 13 · Lesson 3 · MATH-4B-C13-L03

Learning goal: Regroup one whole as ten tenths during subtraction.

Before you begin: prerequisite check

Recall: 13.01–13.02. Attempt these questions independently first.

Question 1 · calculation

Calculate 4.8 + 3.5.

Show answer and reasoning
8.3

The tenths combine to 13 tenths, which makes one whole and 3 tenths. Add whole units to get 8.3.

Question 2 · calculation

Calculate 2.9 + 4.5.

Show answer and reasoning
7.4

The tenths combine to 14 tenths, which makes one whole and 4 tenths. Add whole units to get 7.4.

Question 3 · calculation

Calculate 1.9 + 0.8.

Show answer and reasoning
2.7

The tenths combine to 17 tenths, which makes one whole and 7 tenths. Add whole units to get 2.7.

Key vocabulary

decimal point
separator between whole units and fractional place values
regroup
exchange equivalent place-value units
hundredth
one hundredth of a whole
exact amount
quantity without rounding

Understand the concept

If the minuend has too few tenths, rename one whole as ten tenths before subtracting. For 3.2−1.7, rewrite 3 wholes and 2 tenths as 2 wholes and 12 tenths. Subtract one whole and seven tenths to get 1.5. You have not changed the value of 3.2; you have only changed its units. Check by adding the difference to the amount subtracted: 1.5+1.7=3.2. If the result seems bigger than the original amount even though you subtracted a positive quantity, your work needs another look.

Common misunderstanding to avoid: Borrowing without maintaining value
