Four standards of mastery
Accuracy on fresh problems, a correct explanation, independence without leading hints, and delayed retention.
Placement, not speed alone
Dimensions Math placement tests should be untimed according to the publisher, with at least an hour allowed. Use answers as diagnostic evidence, not an automatic pass/fail grade.

How to reassess the student
Allow independent, untimed work and record the active working time.
Separate incorrect answers from unanswered questions; they provide different evidence.
For a repeated test, note that prior exposure creates a practice effect.
Give fresh, equivalent questions for missed and skipped topics.
Assess bar-model comprehension separately from arithmetic.
Advance through 3B → 4A → 4B → 5A → 5B as demonstrated mastery justifies.
Black/blue pen protocol: A practical optional approach is black through minute 60, blue afterward, and a record of total working time. The 60-minute color change is a diagnostic marker, not a second deadline.
Use official publisher assessments for additional evidence.
